Resources, originality and theft
author=Atavus Dei link=topic=3324.msg66331#msg66331 date=1236879555Yeah, that's the crux of the matter. So?
"If they didn't protect it, they asked for trouble!"
...Is all I'm getting from that post, Yellow Magic.
Granted, there are people out there who would grab resources and not give a shit whether or not the original artist approved the use or not. Is there anything honestly wrong with respecting the creator's wishes? No, but that's not my point. Here's an analogy: a guy waving his mobile phone around in the middle of CURRY MILE (all you have to know is that it's a populous road with loads of thieves about) shouldn't complain if a pickpocket steals it, should he?(...yeah I'm not very good with analogies but I hope you get the idea).
Really though, if we try looking from an "open-source" angle (thanks Karsu-myman), why shouldn't we allow others to share our resources, and why should we be so concerned about "e-cred" as well? Most of us aren't 10 year olds anymore and we should behave appropiately, whether we are "angry-take-out-frustration-on-internet" types or not the fact of the matter is RMing is (or at least should be) just a hobby (by the way Karsuman, if you want to hone your skills in game developing or graphic design, I don't think the RPG Maker series is the way to go) and should be treated as such.
Also, on a side note, music and sound effects cannot be protected under XP/VX.Whoops
EDIT EDIT: I just remembered it was music that was stolen. Er, a few of my points still stand, maybe.
Resources, originality and theft
1) This is about custom resources. If someone makes them and they submit them to a resource site, fine. Expect people to use them. But what if they make their own stuff for a game and do not submit it to a site? That's a totally different story.Like I said earlier, resource encryption (or whatever you'd call it) is key. I'm not sure how you'd go about it so don't ask, lolz.
2) Legacy001's resources were not original so his complaints were bunk anyway. He made a few system sets of his own I think. |: In either case, the point was that he protected his resources so that they wouldn't be stolen/used by someone else. Which is what everyone should do if they're not willing to let others use their resources.
3) SFL's post does not coincide with your beliefs. He continues on to say why it's important to respect original work.Honestly put I'm of the belief that all work, commercial and non-commercial alike, should be respected and used at all by others, if it can be helped. I hinted at that with my Square-Enix point.
Point 4 is a mess and doesn't need to be commented on.
EDIT:
Also, some people do plan to make a living associated with the skills they apply towards RM*. So just because you don't, doesn't mean others won't.Good luck to such people I guess? I can't really say much.
Resources, originality and theft
mmm...RPG Maker debates.
I think anyone who's getting pissed off due to having resources stolen from them needs a little reality check, not only because it's a dog-eat-dog world even on the internet, but:
1. You submit resources to the site, and they're free domain. Why else would you submit them?
2. It's your own problem if someone has stolen your resources, because if you were really that pissy you'd have the common sense to pull a Legacy001 and hide the material precious to you.. Unless that can't be done with XP/VX in which case tough I guess.
Not to mention ripping from commercial games is just as bad; do you think Square-Enix graphic designers aren't human or something? They've put as much work into their "original resources" as you guys do, and even more, most likely.
Basically I agree with SFLV and anyone else who referred to the hideous double standards.
EDIT: For the record, no, I would never give two shits if anyone stole my amazing FFVII Cloud artwork without my consent, because it'd not be like I draw for a living, anyway. If RM is your hobby instead of your profession shouldn't you be enjoying the game development process rather than bitching about ethics?

Don't Smoke and Raid - Moronic Forum Edition
I'm too lazy to read the whole topic but I still want to know what the argument is here exactly? Is it just a relativism thing, because I'm pretty sure the vices seemingly listed in this topic (weed, cigarettes, binge drinking etc.) are all potentially harmful, both physically and mentally.
